MATH Placement Exam Instructions

The MATH Placement Exam is a diagnostic tool to assess your readiness for calculus coursework and it is not a pass / fail exam. Your exam score will be used for your placement in either Precalculus (MATH 5) or Calculus I  (MATH 11 or 21). We would like to highlight that it is important to start with the appropriate math class level.

  • Students are highly advised to work on this placement exam without using any external aids or resources. The purpose of this test is to find an accurate course placement based on your current mathematical knowledge, and the use of any outside resources will only hinder your success in the long run as you may be placed in a course for which you are not prepared.
  • Access the Math Placement Exam at https://mdtpassessment.ucsd.edu/login.  Students will be sent an access code to use in order to take the online exam.  New students should refer to their email for specific access code information.
  • Before logging in to take the exam, please be ready with your student ID number, first and last name as they appear on your UC Merced record.
